Auditions will take place in November. Please fill out the form below to receive an audition time.
Please prepare a short excerpt of music displaying your ability on the following: Keyboard Percussion, Concert Snare Drum, Timpani or Drumset, and any other instrument you feel will demonstrate your ability. You will also be asked to sight-read on the above instruments. You will have 30 minutes for your audition.
Advanced Steel Band
Come ready to play a short excerpt on your choice of steelpan. You will also be asked to sight-read and/or learn some new music on other pans. This is done to evaluate your learning ability. You will have 20 minutes in your audition.
All Other Ensembles (Beginning/Intermediate Percussion Ensemble, Steel Band, Drumline, etc.)
A prepared excerpt of about 2 minutes is recommended, but not required. You will be asked to play rhythmic exercises alone and with accompaniment. No previous experience is required for some ensembles, so all are welcome to be evaluated on Audition day to be placed in an ensemble.
Concert Percussion Fundamentals Course
The Drum Labs percussion academy will be offering a special 3 month Concert Percussion Fundamentals course for young musicians October 7 to December 16, 2015. This course will supplement their school percussion training and give them vital experience using important rehearsal and performance skills. Some of the skills they will use are the following:
- Crash cymbal techniques
- Concert bass drum techniques
- Keyboard percussion techniques
- Tambourine techniques
- Triangle techniques
- Shaker and auxiliary techniques
- Conga, bongo, and other hand percussion techniques
- Mallet and stick changes in mid performance
- Set-up concepts
- Muffling techniques
- Ensemble sensitivity and awareness
- MOST IMPORTANTLY - Making music with friends in ensembles!
These skills and more will be put into practice through a series of ensemble pieces written specifically for this purpose. Each ensemble addresses several oft-neglected aspects of percussion in a fun, engaging way. Young musicians will obtain the know-how of being a dependable percussionist, or even section leader, in any ensemble (band, orchestra, chamber group, etc.). Every director will want percussionists that have taken this course.
The course will include ten rehearsals for an hour and a half each. Tuition is $250 total. Spots are limited. For more information, please use the contact and speak with me directly. It is my intention to provide the best preparation possible for your child’s musical success.
